The Supervisor as Teacher, Model, and Mentor for Careers and Psychotherapy

In the last decade counseling psychologists have made great strides in becoming full partners in the provision of mental health services, unfortunately, in the rush to become accepted as mental health providers the specialized knowledge of career counseling has not been emphasized. Two areas of professional training that can make a contribution to the integration of career and vocational information into psychotherapy are discussed. First, the counseling psychology curriculum and practice sites, and second, the role of supervisor. The supervisor, as teacher, model and mentor can help students to recognize the importance of career decision-making and work activities in their own lives and the lives of their clients.
